³º With the disbandment of PANTERA approximately a º ³
³º decade ago, various supergroups, side projects º ³
³º and fresh musical endeavours have been sought by º ³
³º the ‘Cowboys From Hell’ which include DOWN, º ³
³º HELLYEAH and more recently KILL DEVIL HILL which º ³
³º features bassist Rex Brown. Vinny Appice (former º ³
³º BLACK SABBATH and more) who birthed the band to º ³
³º deliver some hard hitting heavy metal. º ³
³º The band has produced a contemporary style of º ³
³º metal, which pays homage to the genre’s roots º ³
³º from decades ago. After releasing their self- º ³
³º titled album in 2012, KILL DEVIL HILL has just º ³
³º released their sophomore record ‘Revolution º ³
³º Rise’.s º ³
³º ‘No Way Out’ explodes with vocalist Dewey Bragg º ³
³º letting out a welcoming roar as he slips into a º ³
³º groovy verse with Brown’s steady bassline, º ³
³º Appice’s technical percussion and Mark Zavon’s º ³
³º thrashy riffs. The track reflects obvious º ³
³º influences from the musicians’ portfolios. º ³
³º Appice counts down with his sticks to direct º ³
³º ‘Crown of Thorns’, a groovy power ballad which º ³
³º emphasises each instrument to its core. Bragg º ³
³º demonstrates a vocal range reminiscent of bands º ³
³º like TESTAMENT, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and co- º ³
³º incidentally HELLYEAH. This track features some º ³
³º sweet guitar solos, and a diverse pace. º ³
³º ‘Long Way From Home’ is a display of metal º ³
³º romance as everything slows down with cymbals º ³
³º and bass elongated joining Bragg’s beautifully º ³
³º held key. This song reflects Bragg’s pure clean º ³
³º vocal ability and how well suited he is for a º ³
³º traditional groove metal band like KILL DEVIL º ³
³º HILL. º ³
³º The atmosphere becomes eerie and the suspense º ³
³º builds in ‘Where Angels Dare to Roam’ after º ³
³º crossing the mid-way point of ‘Revolution Rise’ º ³
³º but after forty seconds; Zavon breaks into a º ³
³º distorted riff which is shortly followed by º ³
³º drums and bass. Bragg’s gruff yet melodious tone º ³
³º returns in perfect sync with the º ³
³º instrumentation. It is tracks like these that º ³
³º are an epiphany for how aesthetically destined º ³
³º these musicians were to play together in one º ³
³º band. º ³
³º Whilst acknowledging old-school bands who fitted º ³
³º into groove and thrash sub-genres of metal, and º ³
³º being aware of the changing trends in these º ³
³º areas; it is easy to realise how well KILL DEVIL º ³
³º HILL fuse the past and present together. They do º ³
³º this in a way which would gain the attention º ³
³º from those who are too young to understand the º ³
³º history of these musical figures as well as º ³
³º those that sweat it and grew up with it. º ³
³º The truth is that many listeners may be those º ³
³º who loved PANTERA, BLACK SABBATH and HEAVEN AND º ³
³º HELL and are curious to see where Appice and º ³
³º Brown are today. This album will not only º ³
³º satisfy that hunger, but blow those away on the º ³
³º calibre of metal being bred. º ³
