Post Description
Acoustic, folk, Scottish, traditional folk, Ullapool.
“Old Dornie” with lyrics by Jan Kilpatrick and drifting limpid piano by Mairearad is a slow walk and a mindful look at the harbour landscape in her native Coigach. “Knockan Crag” another observational song starts as a drift until Green’s piano and Iain Hutchison’s guitar and electronics build into a storm behind Mairearad’s ethereal voice. “Camuscoillie” is a slowly building ambient conversation between Green’s Small Pipes, Piano and Accordion and Hutchison’s contemporary textures. Soft and shifting like weather this instrumental is big on atmosphere and space. Green layers up an interesting arrangement that falls away to a sublime piano motif.
“To The Ground” and “Tide And Time” have a feeling of tension and menace, stepping into Daughter or electronic pop territory. Green’s singing and the songs treatment put me strongly in mind of 90s Wicker Man referencing Sneaker Pimps. “I Swallowed The Sky” is gentler and just beautiful with shimmering voice and textures that fill the room. “Tim” is raw folktronica, the visceral Small Pipes and Accordion with the drone textures of the Accordion doing a minimalist Terry Riley slow build. “Long Night’s Moon” again with lyrics by Kilpatrick is a soft loving reflection of half remembered evenings of dancing and fire sides. There is warmth and affection in both the lyrics and the delivery. “Painted Lady” ponders the beauty of butterflies in a beautiful keyboards and voice lullaby. Again the subtle layering of voice and instruments is a delight. Vashti Bunyan for the electronica generation.
Wrapped in Mairearad Green’s painting, both the music and the packaging connect to the slowly shifting weather and Highland landscape. Indeed the music was written as an integral part of Mairearad’s exhibition at An Talla Solais Gallery in Ullapool. Green finds that creating, both music and painting allows her to be transported to mindful state. TIM is both a reflective soundtrack and an invitation to travel with her.
