³º Description : º ³
³º º ³
³º Jarno Keskinen, the driving force behind º ³
³º Kenziner and Virtuocity, has returned after an º ³
³º extended break from the music scene with his º ³
³º first music put to tape since Vituocity's last º ³
³º demo, Fire and Fury, which dropped in 2009. º ³
³º Shifting his focus once again to Kenziner, The º ³
³º Last Horizon not only marks Keskinen's third º ³
³º Kenziner album, but it marks the first Kenziner º ³
³º album in fifteen years. With a freshly revamped º ³
³º lineup, Kenziner makes a fifteen year break look º ³
³º like the drop of a hat. º ³
³º º ³
³º Indeed, not much has changed with the band, as º ³
³º Keskinen's songwriting skills are still top º ³
³º notch and the band's music is laden with his º ³
³º superb guitar work. The Last Horizon showcases º ³
³º an even approach, with a healthy mix of fast- º ³
³º paced scorchers, like “Run for Your Life” and º ³
³º “No Turning Back”, and slower, mid-tempo melodic º ³
³º metal, such as “Keep the Flame Alive”. This is º ³
³º in a rather stark comparison to Kenziner's º ³
³º previous full length, The Prophecies, was º ³
³º exceptionally front loaded (all the killer º ³
³º tracks first, which left the remaining filler to º ³
³º fizzle out by the end). Keskinen's guitar skills º ³
³º have certainly not waned over the years, as º ³
³º there are shredding, Malmsteen styled solos all º ³
³º over the place. The title track has one of the º ³
³º speediest, fiery numbers on board and even º ³
³º boasts a rather Stratovarius styled keyboard º ³
³º versus guitar lead battle. Even the ballad-esque º ³
³º “Perfect Moment” features a stunning melodic º ³
³º solo, full of arpeggios and fast-paced fret º ³
³º maneuvering. While this is certainly a Kenziner º ³
³º album, I get a lot less of that old school, º ³
³º neoclassical vibe that was so present on the º ³
³º earlier albums. The more modern sound presented º ³
³º actually sounds a tad more like Keskinen’s º ³
³º Virtuocity project, but that’s definitely not a º ³
³º bad thing. º ³
³º º ³
³º The Last Horizon is the Kenziner debut for Book º ³
³º of Reflections and Status Minor vocalist Markku º ³
³º Kuikka. I was a big fan of Stephen Fredrick's º ³
³º vocals on the first two Kenziner albums, so º ³
³º Kuikka certainly had his work cut out for him, º ³
³º at least from my end. While Fredrick's voice was º ³
³º a gruffer powerful style of vocals, not unlike º ³
³º many early US power metal bands, Kuikka's vocals º ³
³º are more mellow and emotional, calling to mind º ³
³º the delivery style of Timo Kotipelto. The rest º ³
³º of the band keeps up the pace, not really º ³
³º standing out, but do you blame them? With a º ³
³º shredding virtuoso like Keskinen, it would be º ³
³º hard for anyone to standout. It’s evident that º ³
³º these guys have their chops, like the super-fast º ³
³º double kicks during “Heroes Ride” and the º ³
³º noodling bass lines during the entire album, but º ³
³º Keskinen still steals the show. º ³
³º º ³
³º In the wake of the symphonic, orchestral and º ³
³º epic flood of influences strewn throughout power º ³
³º metal in the past few years, it's surprisingly º ³
³º refreshing to hear a modern take on classic º ³
³º progressive power metal. Sure, there really º ³
³º aren't any new ideas presented on The Last º ³
³º Horizon, but there aren't many bands left in º ³
³º today's day and age that play old school metal º ³
³º like with the amount of conviction that Keskinen º ³
³º and crew exude. Fans of Fourth Dimension and º ³
³º Episode era Stratovarius will find something to º ³
³º their liking for sure with this album. If you º ³
³º dig Yngwie Malmsteen's guitar playing but are º ³
³º looking for stronger songwriting than that º ³
³º arrogant fool has managed since the early º ³
³º eighties, look no further. Kenziner are back and º ³
³º The Last Horizon is far and away their strongest º ³
³º work to date. º ³
