³º Description : º ³
³º º ³
³º º ³
³º U.D.O.‘s latest studio offering, Steelhamer, was º ³
³º a really good record. Though it had weak points, º ³
³º it was overall one of Udo Dirkschnieder‘s finest º ³
³º post-Accept releases. So it’s really only º ³
³º natural that he and his band would choose now to º ³
³º release another live document. While I was kind º ³
³º of anticipating that this album (recorded in º ³
³º Moscow during the Steelhammer tour) would be a º ³
³º bit superfluous due to the abundance of live º ³
³º releases from this band, I was instead met with º ³
³º probably their best live album to date. º ³
³º º ³
³º The first reason for the high quality is the º ³
³º overall lack of Accept material. I am a HUGE º ³
³º Accept fan, but I’ve always thought that U.D.O. º ³
³º had a habit of overusing material from his º ³
³º former band. U.D.O. has a lot of great material º ³
³º that deserves to be played just as much as “Fast º ³
³º as a Shark” or “Balls to the Wall”, and while º ³
³º U.D.O. should by no means ignore the old Accept º ³
³º stuff, some of their previous live releases º ³
³º would dedicate over a third of their total run- º ³
³º times to Accept. This time out only “Metal º ³
³º Heart”, the closing track, represents the man’s º ³
³º past. It’s an incredibly welcomed change. º ³
³º º ³
³º More importantly, this is one of the best º ³
³º sounding live albums in the U.D.O. catalog. It’s º ³
³º crisp, clear, full bodied and well rounded, with º ³
³º Udo pushed right out front where he should be, º ³
³º showing the world just how little his vicious º ³
³º vocal bite has dampened since the mid-eighties. º ³
³º This is most evident on galloping walloper “Go º ³
³º Back to Hell” from Animal House and “Future º ³
³º Land” from Faceless World, as well as fave-rave º ³
³º “Holy” from the ’99 album of the same name. º ³
³º º ³
³º The Steelhammer tour was the first run for º ³
³º U.D.O.‘s new line-up, with longtime side-men º ³
³º Stefan Kaufmann and Igor Gianola having both º ³
³º recently left the band. Their replacements, º ³
³º Andrey Smirnov and Kasperi Heikkinen, do exactly º ³
³º what’s required for membership in this famed º ³
³º Teutonic war-machine, supplying soul and groove º ³
³º with their playing, putting their own spin on º ³
³º solos, refusing to be restricted by their º ³
³º predecessors’ works. º ³
³º º ³
³º A live album like this is incredibly refreshing º ³
³º in an age when good quality live documents seems º ³
³º to have become a lost art. Live albums have, º ³
³º when done right, become some of the most º ³
³º legendary records in the genre (See: Unleashed º ³
³º in the East, Live After Death, Tokyo Tapes, º ³
³º etc.) If Live from Moscow had been released in º ³
³º the mid-eighties, I have no doubt it would have º ³
³º been hailed as a classic too. º ³
