The first entry in director Chang Cheh’s Shaolin Cycle concerns the first meeting of kung fu folk heroes Hung Hei-gun (Chen Kuan-tai) and Fong Sai-yuk (Fu Sheng) as they battle Manchu forces following the destruction of the southern Shaolin Temple. Sai-yuk mistakes Hei-gun for a criminal and is tricked into helping the Manchus defeat and capture him. When Sai Yuk discovers his mistake, he struggles to help Hei-gun escape. Joined by other Ming loyalists, Hei-gun and Sai-yuk team up to battle a Tibetan martial arts-trained Qing general (Zhu Mu) bent on destroying Shaolin and all of their remaining students. Produced by Chang’s Taiwanese-based Chang Film Co. and distributed by Shaw Brothers, HEROES TWO is an enjoyable, action-packed kung fu classic featuring excellent “shapes” choreography from master action directors Lau Kar-leung and Tang Chia.
