³º Description : º ³
³º º ³
³º There is a plague circulating the metal º ³
³º community these days; it is an affliction that º ³
³º forces the musicians to over-write songs, often º ³
³º to the point where they become tedious and º ³
³º soul-less. We now live in a world where º ³
³º simplicity is often regarded as incompetent, º ³
³º while technicality and uniqueness (no matter how º ³
³º dumb) are blindly hailed as king by many º ³
³º delusional critics. The result- music that all º ³
³º too often doesn’t have the same passion and º ³
³º sincerity our parents were able to relish via º ³
³º bands like Priest and Sabbath. º ³
³º º ³
³º Lynch Mob is the brainchild of famed guitarist º ³
³º George Lynch, who first made a name for himself º ³
³º during the ‘80s as the driving force behind the º ³
³º popular hair metal band Dokken. Lynch then º ³
³º created a side project that extended throughout º ³
³º the ‘90s and has even reunited in recent years. º ³
³º The group’s 1990 debut Wicked Sensation doesn’t º ³
³º entirely deviate from the hair metal formula, º ³
³º but it does add in more hard rock and classic º ³
³º heavy metal flare to form what I would argue is º ³
³º the highlight album of Lynch’s illustrious º ³
³º career. Complete with catchy hooks, groovy º ³
³º riffs, smooth guitar tones, and endless solos of º ³
³º the melodic-yet-technical variety that made º ³
³º Lynch a legend, Wicked Sensation is the type of º ³
³º album that is virtually effortless to jam to. º ³
³º º ³
³º So, it is worthwhile to flashback and listen to º ³
³º Wicked Sensation which is a crash course in º ³
³º well-made music that manages to retain º ³
³º personality and plenty of subtleties that will º ³
³º keep the listener engaged for many listens to º ³
³º come without the directionless use of º ³
³º virtuosity, signature changes, and technicality. º ³
³º Of course, there is nothing wrong with any of º ³
³º the aforementioned, but they all quickly become º ³
³º cheap attempts at stardom when not used º ³
³º sparingly. Rather, George Lynch has a knack at º ³
³º being able to father simple riffs and melodies º ³
³º that get the job done. Add in driving drumbeats, º ³
³º superb production (especially for its time), and º ³
³º the vocals of Oni Logan and you’ve got yourself º ³
³º a recipe for Rock n’ Roll success that pays º ³
³º homage to decades worth of hard rock while º ³
³º moving forward into the ‘90s alongside the new º ³
³º guard.s º ³
³º º ³
³º Speaking of Oni Logan, he was basically an º ³
³º unknown at the national level at the time of º ³
³º this release; but Lynch found a gem, because one º ³
³º could’ve easily been tricked into thinking Logan º ³
³º was a hair metal superstar from prior years. º ³
³º Much in the same way that Lynch still utilizes º ³
³º tons of power chords but transcends beyond the º ³
³º one-dimensional guitar playing characterized in º ³
³º the ‘80s, Oni Logan can hit the high notes but º ³
³º doesn’t sound like he has a rod up his tail the º ³
³º way his counterparts from the hair metal scene º ³
³º did. Lynch Mob successfully straddles the line º ³
³º between hair metal and the 1990s, and creates an º ³
³º album that should’ve appealed to a wider º ³
³º audience. º ³
³º º ³
³º The majority of this record emits positivity & º ³
³º upbeat-ness, and is guaranteed to get some º ³
³º craniums rocking. For those of you worried about º ³
³º the hair metal cheese factor, fear not; Wicked º ³
³º Sensation has far less than what you’re º ³
³º expecting. In simplest terms possible, Lynch and º ³
³º crew put out a noteworthy album that is more º ³
³º along the lines of early Zakk Wylde-era Ozzy º ³
³º Osbourne than anything Dokken ever did. Lynch º ³
³º Mob never achieved the same level of commercial º ³
³º success as Dokken, but that is just a testament º ³
³º to American culture in general because Wicked º ³
³º Sensation would’ve been a worthy recipient. º ³
